Question: How do I set up a custom Domain name?
When you sign up for your AresBuilder website, you are able to choose the "subdomain" name you would like to use for your site. Visitors may navigate to your site by entering yoursubdomain.aresbuilder.com into their address bar. If you would like, we do offer you the option to link up your own custom domain (such as yourdomain.com or yourwebsite.net) to your AresBuilder website. You wouldn't have to pay anything extra to us for this service, but domains do typically cost around $10-20 a year through a domain registrar.
The first step to having your own domain would be to select, register, and pay for a domain name from a domain registrar company, such as GoDaddy.com or NameCheap.com. There are many other domain registrars, so we just recommend doing a search on your favorite search site.
Once you've signed up with a domain registrar, or if you already have a domain registered in your name, applying your domain name to your AresBuilder website is a simple two-step process.
- First, login to AresBuilder.com. On the main dashboard, click on the green “View Control Panel” button toward the center of the page. This is where you can edit the title, description, and domain information of your site. In the “Custom Domain” field, you will need to input the domain name you wish to use, in the following format: "www.yourdomainname.com." Don’t forget to include the “www” prefix and the “.com” or other suffix!
- Next, you will need to visit your domain name registrar’s website (GoDaddy.com, NameCheap.com, etc - whichever you used to purchase your custom domain name.) Once there, you will need to change the CNAME and enable domain name forwarding so you may point them towards AresBuilder.com. If you need further assistance with this step, your domain registrar should have some additional resources for you.
If you ever wish to stop domain forwarding, you will want to change your DNS settings with your domain registrar. When you log into your domain provider (GoDaddy.com, NameCheap.com, etc - whichever you used to purchase your custom domain name) you simply need to point the DNS to the new servers of your choosing, rather than AresBuilder.
If you changed these to point to AresBuilder previously, you will need to contact the folks you wish to host with and gather their DNS information to set up your new domain forwarding. If you saved the servers that the domain name was previously applied to, you can just re-submit that information in the DNS field boxes to your domain server.
