Blocks: How To - Add or Edit a Menu Block
Every AresBuilder site is already equipped automatically with a menu, which appears at the top of your page, near your site title. However, it can sometimes be useful to add an additional menu block somewhere else on your site. For example, if you want to build a menu of links to external resource sites, or if you want to link only to specific pages on your site, and direct site visitors there. In this tutorial, we will discuss how to add a menu block, and how to edit an existing one.
To add a menu block to your site, first open up your site editor.
Once there, select the Blocks menu option from the grey site editor menu tray at the top of the page.
Select the “Menu” option from the blocks menu, and drag and drop the new menu onto your page anywhere you see a light gray dashed-line box on page. When you have arrived at a valid location for your menu block, you should see a green line across the top of the blank space indicating you have the green light to drop your block there.
Our basic menu block automatically has one link that just says "custom menu link." To get valid links in your new menu, you must edit the menu block. To do this, simply click on the pencil icon in the upper left corner of your menu block.
Here, you will see options of existing pages you already have on your site under the title "Available Pages," as well as the option to add a custom menu link. First, let's add pages from your existing catalog.
To do so, simply locate the page you wish to display in your new menu from the list of options on the left. To add a page to the menu, click on the right pointing arrow icon to the right of the page name. It will move from the left list, to the right, indicating it is now in your custom menu block. To remove pages from the custom menu block, click on the left pointing arrow icon, and it will move back to the list of available pages. If you wish to change the order in which the pages appear, you may click the four way directional arrow icon, hold, and drag and drop it into the order you prefer.
Hot Tip! If you are creating a secondary menu on your home page, for example, it might be useful to exclude the home page link from the menu, since your site viewers are already on your home page, and if they clicked that link it would not take them to a new page!
If you wish to include a link to a page on a different site, you can do this through the custom menu block as well. Simply click on the blue "Create New Custom Link" button on the lower left of the menu editing screen. A new item will appear in the right hand list.
You have the options to type in text, and a URL for the link. Text can be anything you want people to see when clicking on your link. For example, if you wanted to link to your personal Facebook page, the title might be "Find me on Facebook!" Then, you simply paste or type a URL into the URL section. Remember, a URL is an address for a website, and usually starts with http://www.
Should you wish to remove a custom link from a menu, click on the X icon to the left of the link title.
Once you're happy with the links and the order in which they appear in your custom menu, click the green Save button on the lower right corner. Your page will reflect your changes, and you may now admire your work on your custom menu!
